The ocean has become both my subject and my lifelong
conversation. As a Kauaʻi-based fine art photographer, I am
drawn to the fleeting moments when the sea reveals something
beyond its physical form. Along the Na Pali Coast, I work in the
narrow window where light, wind, tide, and swell converge,
transforming breaking waves into luminous sculptures that exist
for only an instant before dissolving back into the sea.
These photographs are not about freezing motion as much as
revealing presence. I am fascinated by the tension between
opposing forces—darkness and illumination, violence and grace,
permanence and impermanence. A wave may carry extraordinary
power, yet in the same breath possess remarkable delicacy. It is
this duality that continually inspires my work.
The dramatic cliffs of Kauaʻi provide more than a backdrop;
they create a stage where shadow allows light to become the
central storyteller. When the sun catches the translucent face of a
wave, water briefly becomes glass, silk, and fire all at once. In
those moments, the familiar transforms into something almost
otherworldly, inviting us to see the ocean not as scenery, but as a
living, expressive force.
My process is rooted in patience, observation, and respect for
nature’s rhythms. The photographs I seek cannot be manufactured
or anticipated. They emerge only through time—by returning
again and again, learning the tides, studying the wind, and
waiting for those rare alignments when nature offers a moment of
extraordinary beauty. Every image is unique because every wave is
unique. Once it has broken, that exact moment is gone forever.
Through my work, I hope viewers experience more than the
spectacle of the sea. I hope they sense its quiet complexity, its
constant transformation, and the delicate balance between
strength and fragility that exists throughout the natural world. If
my photographs encourage someone to pause, look longer, and
feel a deeper connection to the rhythms of the ocean, then they
have fulfilled their purpose.
The waves I photograph vanish within seconds. My
photography allows those extraordinary moments of beauty to
endure.
